Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival

Dayenu has marched in the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade every year since Dayenu's creation in 2000 (except for 2006). A lot has changed since then. Back then, a Jewish float in the Parade was a front-page story in the Australian Jewish News, and while the newspaper was very supportive of Dayenu, there was outrage within certain sections of the Sydney Jewish community. Letters and articles supporting and opposing the Jewish GLBTI community were published in the pages of the AJN for months. You can see them all in Dayenu's archives.

Ultimately, the overall response was positive, resulting in increased awareness of and support for LGBTI issues within the mainstream Jewish community. Unfortunately, there remains an undercurrent of unwavering homophobia from certain individuals within the more traditional sections of the community.

If you would like to march with Dayenu's float in the 2019 Mardi Gras Parade, please contact us at parade@dayenu.org.au.

This year, Fair Day is on Sunday 17 February 2019.

Dayenu will again have a stall at Fair Day. Come on down and say hello to the Dayenu team. We need volunteers to help out at the at the stall between 9am and 4pm. Choose your 90 minute slot. If you would like to help out please email us.

Homophobia, Antisemitism and the Politics of ‘Othering’

The Sydney Jewish Museum is partnering with Dayenu, Sydney’s Jewish LGBT+ Group, to present a panel that will explore the intersectionality between homophobia and antisemitism.

The panel will be followed by a discussion to reflect on experiences of marginalisation, oppression and ‘othering’, and consider the path towards greater equity in all aspects of communal life.

This forum is part of the lead up to the 25th World Congress Jewish LGBT+ Conference being held in Sydney, 21-24 March 2019.

This is a free event. Booking is essential. Click here to book.

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade

Date: Saturday 2 March 2019
Meet: Harmony Park (behind Surry Hills Police Station) at 4:30pm. Parade finishes around 10pm

Over the years Jews have contributed so much to gay culture, and for Mardi Gras’ 40th anniversary, Dayenu wants to celebrate that contribution.

Concept for the Float
On a central podium on a flat-bed truck three of the biggest Jewish gay-icons, Barbara Streisand, Bette Middler, Fran Drescher (The Nanny), perform a mash-up medley of their greatest hits. These Jewish icons have been entertaining the world and supporting LGBTQI rights for more than 40 years each, and it’s time to celebrate them. The Icons will be on a red carpet, behind bollards. “Paparazzi” will be on the float with them taking their pictures. Behind the truck marches the rest of Dayenu and its supporters, wearing special Mardi Gras T-shirts.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

1) Driver for 3 ton truck - Must be over 25 with current licence (no special requirement)
2) Two Marshalls to attend a meeting in Feb and take up role on the night
3) Volunteers to help make and decorate hearts and Magen Daveds for Float.
